December 2003
|
 |
|
IN THIS ISSUE:
- NAMMA / LAMM REPORT: This is a report on the 2003 Conference of North America Maritime Ministry Association at Emeryville, CA on September 21-24, 2003. Looking back on the Conference, it was a very good one for me. When you can get together with folks that work the Ports and compare notes, you find the same problems occurring around the country. Crews are not able to have shore passes, cell phones come with a complete set of problems of their own and lack of time to meet the crew needs...

- THANKSGIVING THANKS: I would like to give thanks to a number of people who helped with the Thanksgiving meal at the Tacoma Seafarers Center on Thanksgiving Day. I usually end up listing my wife last; but this time, because she is so good to and for me all year long, I first wish to thank my wife Sarah for baking that
delicious turkey. Thanks also go to...

- THANKSGIVING: At this time of the year I would like to say thank you for the support that all of you have given us at the Seafarers Center. Your prayers and help in meeting all our other needs are greatly appreciated...

WHATS IN A YEAR? Many readers know we are honored to celebrate the life of Christ one more time, that there are 365 sunsets, and the average human heart beats 525,600 times. This year has seemed but a brief moment since Pearl Ginther drove with me down Alexander Avenue, to a place that has changed my life. It was the Centers season of love and we were delivering 35 gifts assembled by Pearl and Mt. View Church. I had personally never understood how our gifts would be used at this place called the Tacoma Seafarers Center....

IN THIS ISSUE:
- CHRISTMAS BOXES ARE IN: Yes, it is that time of year again! Come and get yours before they are all gone. We have 2000 boxes for this year. It is always best to call before you come down...
( MORE in our November Issue )
- TOP WISDOM: The rope handrails on the side of the gangway were greasy and the stairs were steep and shaky, but the welcome smile on the face of a young Chinese seaman made the climb worthwhile. The 4,000-ton capacity bulk grain cargo ship Top Wisdom of Chinese registry had arrived at...

- JOHNNY APPLESEED VISITS CENTER: It all started in KJV Genesis 1:11, and God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth, and it was so. The fruit which the Bible says Adam and Eve ate in the Garden of Eden, is believed by many people to have been an apple. Many years later a man named...

- BIBLES, VIDEOS and CDs: We are having another BVC Fundraiser. Do you have any used books, videos or cds that are in good condition? We have need of many of them. Call us to come pick them up, drop them off at the Tacoma Seafarers Center, or at your church. NOTE: We cannot accept the condensed Readers Digest Books. Spread the word to family and friends so they can participate. This is very much needed, as our finances are very limited...

- SPEAKING OF FINANCES: This year has seen some drastic reduction in our receiving financial support. For some reason it seems that we have lost some of our supporters. We understand that the economy has been a bit tough on many of us, but we still have Gods work to do at the Center.

- THE DAY IT SNOWED SHIRTS OR CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST - I received a call from Northwest Embroidery; they were cleaning out their warehouse, getting ready for the new Fall and Winter line of clothing. They had found more T-shirts and hats from Microsoft. Would we like them? Would a bear like honey? Would a squirrel like nuts? Would a Seafarer like new clothes? In total, thanks to Northwest Embroidery and Microsoft; they donated 3,410 shirts and 750 hats. What a wonderful gift...

- HONESTLY FOLKS I DONT WRITE NOVELS! - The day, September 11, 2003, sorry this does not have anything to do with 9-11, but the strange way our Lord guides us here at the Port. I had put 24 T-shirts and other materials into the van for a visit to, as yet, an unknown ship. Gene, months back had challenged me to visit ships, as I deemed appropriate...

IN THIS ISSUE:
- FROM THE DIRECTOR'S DESK: I have been reflecting on the first half of this year and how truly blessed I am, as we all are. The Lord has given us a unique opportunity to serve Him in the Port of Tacoma area. As I see the ships come in from all parts of the world, I am overwhelmed with the potential for us to bring the Gospel of Jesus to so many people and to disciple the Nations.
