FEATURED IN THIS ISSUE:

  • FROM THE DESK OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DEACON H. GENE LAWRENCE:
    A LOOK FORWARD:
We are eagerly exploring ways to progress in our ministry in and around the Port of Tacoma. We have found a need to enhance our training of present and future Port Chaplains and Assistant Port Chaplains. We need to continue in the study of God’s Word and put the principals learned to practical application as we interface with the many men and women seafarers from around the globe. Our ministry is holistic, in that we are here for the physical, emotional and spiritual welfare of those we serve. We need to learn how to more effectively use...

  • MORE THAN MOVEMENT TO THE MALL: The Tacoma Seafarers’ Center (TSC) has a friendship ministry of moving seafarers from their ships to the mall. More important than the materials seafarers buy is the message we bring while moving them from here to there. I was sharing the good news to a group of seafarers on the way back to their ship. They were receptive and eager to know how to have assurance of salvation. Two days later I met again one of those men who were...

  • UPDATE FROM LLOYD BOVEE: Thanksgiving has came and gone and now there are only a few short days until Christmas. Phyllis and I had our Golden Wedding Anniversary on November 5th with family, friends and fellow workers in the Lord. For me, I know it was one day at a time and all in all they were good, some better then others, but that’s life. My brother-in-law Phillip Swenke and son-in-law Robert Oates were here for the anniversary and we visited a large ship called...

His email was part of our usual communication regarding his ship's arrival time. However, in this email, he had a request for some head cover for some of his crew. I contacted one of our Port Chaplains, Lloyd Bovee, who responded to the Center Annex to give me...

  • FROM THE DESK OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DEACON H. GENE LAWRENCE:
WELCOME ! WELCOME ! We want to extend a warm welcome to our new partner in sharing the gospel message of Jesus Christ. Steve Maxted of MGL/Multilingual of the South Asian Ministry heads up this wonderful Bible ministry where I purchase the many Bibles for the seafarer in their own language. Steve also has many gospel tracts that we use to plant the seeds of the gospel of our Lord. Steve and his family have been moving his inventory into our Center. Soon they will have a modular building on our property that they will...

  • UPDATE FROM LLOYD BOVEE: Our fall has arrived in the Pacific Northwest and our rains have started, but without the rains there would be no green grass and trees. I have been saying a special thank you for my family members and friends that have given so generously to the Seafarers ministry where the Lord has placed me. I have done many things over the years, but this is by far the best. Thank you, it is a gift of validation for this ministry. Now that gasoline has gone up and up, it hasn’t been good for the budget. Our large van with 147,000 miles on it lost its...

Having climbed the steep-angled gangway, they were met at the top by the officer of the deck. While they were signing the visitors’ log, the officer’s two-way radio crackled with the message: “bring them to the ship’s office.” The voice on the other end of the message was none other than Captain Lu King-Kong who had been watching the boarding process on the closed-circuit video security cameras. The deck officer escorted...

  • CHRISTMAS BOXES: They are in, come and get yours. This Is the time of the year that is exciting … when we give out these gifts to seafarers who have, in many cases, never received a Christmas gift before. Of course, this also gives us a unique opportunity to share the Gospel message about the Christ that some seafarers have not met before. Praise be to God the Father for His Wondrous Love !...

  • UPDATE FROM LLOYD BOVEE: My how fast time goes, and as they say “time and the tide waits for no man.” When I was seven years old, it seemed it took forever between Thanksgiving and Christmas; but not now, it’s already Christmas at Costco. Captain Pascualito M. Banque of the M/V Chuetsu Maru requested a mass be held on his ship. Whenever some Captain asks if we can hold a church service such as a communion or mass, we always try to fulfill these requests. This time Father John Wilkie from Holy Rosary Parish came and met their needs. When I called and asked him if he could do the mass, he said “yes”; then my next question...

I am truly thankful every day for the volunteers that our Lord has brought to the Tacoma Seafarers’ Center, and for the loving and serving attitude that they each bring to our ministry. But, at this time, I wish to thank some of our volunteers who have worked so hard at our Satellite Center this past month. We are now ready to operate. Donna Eckhoff and her granddaughter, Kelly Hannula, have been busy cleaning, painting and vacuuming. The Center is really taking shape and smells and looks clean. By the time this newsletter is mailed, we will be up and running. In addition to Donna and Kelly, George Stokes and Jesse Reynolds have been busy fixing ceiling tiles, putting up new light fixtures and trimming the hedges outside the building. Of course, they have moved furniture about the Center as well. If something is broken or leaks, I can always count on Roy Blakeslee to be on the job finding just the right part to accomplish the task at hand. At times one would think...

We have been talking about our satellite center on the other side of the waterway from our main base of operations. I have some good news about how the Lord has been blessing our endeavors. I was able to obtain the site from the Port of Tacoma for an unbelievable price. All I can say is that it is like getting it for free. This site is temporary, with the understanding that we will probably have to move within 3 years. However, this gives the seafarers an opportunity to walk to our facility which is now centrally located for them and close to their ships. As some of you may remember, the seafarers were able to walk across the 11th Street Bridge to visit our Center. That came to a halt when the bridge was removed from across the Blair waterway. • FROM CHAPLAIN LLOYD BOVEE: I have been asked many times why there are so many translations of the Bible and in the publication “the Word for you today” there in one of the best explanations that I have ever seen and read. There are two important reasons why there are so many translations. “First, the Bible was originally written using 11,280 Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek words, but the typical English translation uses only around 6,000 words. Obviously, nuances and shades of meaning can be missed, so it is always helpful to compare translations. Second, we often miss the full impact of familiar Bible verses, not because of poor translating, but simply because they have become so familiar! We think we know what a verse says because we have read it or...
