  • FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK: On 19 February 2010, Ed Egan and I visited with the new Real Estate Director for the Port of Tacoma. We introduced ourselves and gave him an overview of who we are, what we do and how this impacts the Port of Tacoma. The Director of R.E. stated that he knew who we were and how important we are within the Maritime Industry in the Port of Tacoma. We talked about what had been told to us regarding...

  • I REMEMBER YOU: Last Monday evening a young Seafarer from a K-Line ship came in the door with an extra warm and happy smile. He did look more familiar than the other crew members, but I didn't know why. The driver for the evening then took them shopping and when they returned I asked him if he would take the current "Daily Devotions" to all the Seafarers on his ship. He said he would be happy to do that and...

  • IT’S GREEK TO ME: For some, technology, computers, internet is Greek to them and maybe for you. But, for one Greek captain it’s not Greek. But, the internet can be used to find a Greek church. We loaned our WiFi internet to a ship in port and on Saturday night the Captain searched on the internet for a Greek church in the area. Then he printed out a map and followed the directions given and...

  • IMAGINE THIS! I am sitting in my nice, warm, dry home in Western Washington. It is raining outside harder than usual for our area. I feel very secure knowing I don't have to go out in this weather. When I do have to drive in it, I remember the words my mother said when I went out while growing up: "Be careful; you're precious!" I feel reasonably safe inside the car, knowing that, as I am cautious, I will most likely avoid any danger. And, of course, my trust is in God to help provide...

  • FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK: I pray that everyone has had a good start for the new year. With the beginning of the New Year comes hopes and aspirations for better and brighter things to come. However, we must never lose sight of the fact that our Gracious God is in control and we must always put our faith and trust in him. That being said, I pray that this new year will provide a rosier picture financially for us. This past year was the most challenging that I personally experienced since being the Executive Director. We ended the year...

  • LOVE IS THE GREATEST: A Filipino seaman wrote the following poem, encouraging loved ones back in the Philippines to love those who go out to sea in ships. Tacoma Seafarers’ Center exists to extend that love to seafarers so far from home.

  • OLGA from The UKRAINE: While delivering Christmas boxes to the PEREGRINE, I met Olga who happened to be the Chief Cook on this vessel. All of the crew were from the Ukraine and it was their first time in Tacoma. While on the ship, the Captain had ordered a Fire Drill and I asked him if I could stay on board and take some pictures. The Captain had no objection so I had a chance to watch and...

January 2010

FEATURED IN THIS ISSUE:

  • FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK: Christmas has past for 2009 and now we are enjoying the start of a new year. I would however, like to reflect a little on the past year. As of this writing we have given out 1294 Christmas boxes. A little less than 200 will be left to give out during the rest of 2009 Christmas season. 2009 was a challenge in many ways, especially since the economy hit everyone so hard, but the Lord was Faithful in making sure that we were able to complete our mission of sharing the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I give all Glory to God for this opportunity to do what has been done. One of our Beloved Ladies of our Ladies Auxiliary had an early Christmas present on...

  • SMILES ALL AROUND - DELIVERING CHRISTMAS BOXES: I was fortunate to deliver Christmas Boxes prepared by our friends here in the Tacoma Area to the THETIS, moored at the TEMCO grain elevator. Fortunate because in my years of volunteering at the Tacoma Seafarers’ Center, I've never seen so many excited crew members when I asked for their help to bring the boxes on board. They welcomed me on deck and I followed them to their crew lounge where they showed me the Christmas tree (actually two) recently decorated. No presents around the tree, but they carefully placed the Christmas Boxes around the...

  • THE LONELY CHRISTIAN: Sue and I were part of the staff on duty at the Seafarers' Center on a Tuesday night just before Christmas. Six seafarers walked into the Center and made some phone calls, used the Internet and made a few store purchases. Five of the men wanted to go shopping at the Tacoma Mall, but the other said he just wanted to be where it was quiet. He made a call to his wife and daughter in the Philippines and after about 30 minutes, he came out where I was working behind the store counter. To break the ice, I asked if he was able to get through to his family and if they were well. I introduced myself and asked him his name. He was Max, the First Oiler on the ship...

  • NEITHER SUB-FREEZING TEMPERATURES: nor -- The picture of these two crew members from the HYUNDAI KINGDOM, huddled outside the Tacoma Seafarers’ Center was taken during the recent cold snap that we had here in Tacoma. Knowing that we would be closing at 9 PM on Friday night, they chose to use their computers in freezing weather to keep in touch with loved ones in the Philippines. Being close to our wireless they can use their computers at any time. I was shivering when I left the Center and could hardly wait to get home, but these two young crew members didn't let the cold weather faze them a bit. Closing the Center, I was in awe at these two and...
